Game Gear Games Online – 39 Sega Handheld Games
The Game Gear (1990) was Sega’s colour handheld – essentially a Master System with a backlit screen and a six-hour battery life. Its library overlaps with the Master System but adds its own Sonic games (Sonic Chaos, Sonic Triple Trouble, Tails Adventure), Shinobi and Shinobi II, Columns, Streets of Rage 2, Ristar and Dynamite Headdy. Past Play hosts 39 Game Gear games in the browser, displayed at the original 160×144 resolution scaled up.
The Game Gear had a D-pad, two buttons and Start, mapped to the arrow keys, Z / X and Enter. Because the screen was smaller than the Master System’s, some shared titles were re-designed with a tighter view – the Game Gear versions of Sonic 1 and 2 are noticeably different games from their SMS counterparts and worth trying side by side. Save states are available on every game.
