Game description:

Released by Sega in 1991, Sonic the Hedgehog for the Game Gear is a distinct 8-bit take on the famous action platformer. Rather than a scaled-down port of the Genesis original, this version introduces unique levels like Bridge Zone and Jungle Zone. The level design shifts the focus away from pure momentum and toward careful, deliberate platforming, which is especially important given the hardware’s tight screen resolution.

How to play

Your goal is to guide Sonic to the end of each act, defeating Dr. Robotnik’s machines and recovering the Chaos Emeralds along the way. Move Sonic with the arrow keys and press Z or X to jump. Jumping automatically curls Sonic into a spin that destroys enemies. Use Enter to start or pause, and Shift to reset the game.

Tips

  • Unlike the 16-bit version, Chaos Emeralds are hidden directly within the regular acts instead of Special Stages, rewarding careful exploration.
  • The Game Gear’s limited screen space gives you very little reaction time. Avoid running at full speed into unfamiliar territory to prevent accidental collisions.
  • While moving, press down on the directional pad to roll. This allows you to attack enemies on the ground and maintain speed while descending hills.
