Parodius Da! (World Set 1) is a 1990 arcade side-scrolling shooter developed by Konami. As a brilliant, comedic parody of the Gradius series, it takes classic shoot-’em-up mechanics and replaces the serious sci-fi setting with bizarre, colourful enemies like flying penguins, cat-shaped pirate ships, and giant showgirls. Players can choose from unique characters, including the Vic Viper, Octopus, TwinBee, and Pentarou, each with their own distinct weapons and power-up meters.
How to Play
The objective is to survive through increasingly chaotic, auto-scrolling stages while shooting enemies and dodging projectiles. The standard arcade controls use an 8-way joystick for movement, one button to shoot, and another to activate the currently highlighted power-up. In the browser, this maps to the arrow keys for movement, along with the Z and X keys for shooting and activating power-ups. Use Enter or Shift to insert coins and start the game.
Tips
- Pay close attention to the Gradius-style power-up bar at the bottom of the screen. Collect capsules dropped by red enemies to advance the meter, and press the power-up button to activate the highlighted upgrade (such as Speed Up, Missile, or Laser).
- Different characters have entirely different arsenals. If you are struggling, try using Octopus for wide-spread attacks, or stick to the Vic Viper if you prefer the traditional Gradius loadout.
- Shoot the floating bells to cycle their colors before collecting them. Different colored bells grant unique, temporary abilities like screen-clearing megaphone attacks or a giant, indestructible character size.
