Developed by Sega in 1991, Crystal Warriors is a turn-based tactical RPG for the Game Gear where you lead a party of fantasy heroes against the invading Jyn empire. Players move their units across grid-based maps, recruit wild monsters, and engage in elemental combat to reclaim the four stolen elemental crystals and restore peace to the realm of Arliel.
How to Play
In each stage, your objective is to defeat the enemy commander or capture their castle. When two units clash on the map, combat shifts to a turn-based battle screen where you can attack, use magic, or retreat. Movement and menu selections are controlled with the arrow keys, with Z acting as your primary action button (Button 2) and X used to cancel or open the menu (Button 1). Press Enter to pause or start the game.
Tips
- Master the elements: Combat relies heavily on a rock-paper-scissors elemental system. Fire beats Wind, Wind beats Water, and Water beats Fire. Earth units are neutral and have no distinct advantage or weakness.
- Tame the wildlife: You can recruit defeated monsters to your side using the “Tame” command if your unit has an empty monster slot, giving you free elemental attacks in future battles.
- Scout before you strike: Use the “Scan” magic to check an enemy’s element and stats before committing to an attack, as a bad elemental matchup can lead to your unit being easily defeated.
