Gunstar Heroes for the Game Gear is an impressive 8-bit demake of Treasure’s legendary 1993 run-and-gun shooter. While it strips back the two-player mode and some levels from the Genesis original, it retains the frantic pacing, massive boss fights, and the signature weapon-combining system. You guide Red through waves of Empire forces, mixing different shot types to create devastating attacks on the fly.
How to play
Your objective is to run, gun, and platform through waves of enemies and defeat the boss at the end of each stage. Use the arrow keys to move and aim, press X to jump, and Z to fire your weapon. You can pause the action with Enter. The game runs directly in your browser, allowing you to save your state instantly with F7 and load it with F8.
Tips
- Experiment with weapons: Combining different shot types (like Homing and Lightning) creates entirely new attacks. Find combinations that work best for clearing crowds versus dealing heavy single-target damage to bosses.
- Use melee attacks: If enemies get too close, you can still use sliding attacks and jump kicks to deal damage without relying solely on your guns.
- Stay mobile: The Game Gear’s smaller screen means you have less time to react to incoming fire, so keep moving and use diagonal jumps to avoid getting cornered.
