Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is an action-platformer developed by SEGA for the Game Gear in 1992. Unlike its 16-bit Genesis counterpart, this 8-bit entry is a completely different adventure where Sonic must rescue Tails. The game features unique zones like Sky High and Aqua Lake, with gameplay that relies more on careful platforming and exploration than sheer speed due to the handheld’s screen size.
How to play
The goal is to navigate each zone, collect rings to protect yourself from damage, and defeat Dr. Robotnik’s badniks to save Tails. Use the arrow keys to move and the Z or X keys to jump and curl into a damaging ball. You can destroy most enemies by jumping on them or rolling while moving, though Sonic does not yet have the Spin Dash ability in this 8-bit release. Press Enter to pause the game.
Tips
- The Game Gear’s tight screen resolution means hazards can appear with very little warning. Move cautiously rather than running blindly, especially in levels with bottomless pits.
- In Sky High Zone, grabbing the hang glider requires you to jump into it and gently steer to catch upward wind drafts without falling.
- During the first boss fight in Under Ground Zone, stay near the middle of the screen to give yourself the maximum amount of time to react to the bouncing projectiles.
