Developed by Westone Co. and released for the Game Gear in 1987, Wonder Boy is a fast-paced action platformer that demands constant forward momentum. You guide a caveboy across tropical islands, cave systems, and forests, throwing stone axes at enemies while racing against a steadily depleting vitality meter.
How to play
Your objective is to reach the end of each stage before your vitality meter runs empty. Collecting fruit along the way restores your health. The controls are mapped to your keyboard: use the arrow keys to move, Z to jump (button 2), and X to throw axes or sprint (button 1). Press Enter to start or pause, and use F7/F8 to save and load your state.
Tips
- The skateboard is a vital power-up. It speeds up your movement, and more importantly, allows you to take one free hit from an enemy or obstacle without dying.
- Memorize where the hidden eggs are located. While most contain helpful items or fairies that grant temporary invincibility, some hide poisonous mushrooms that will rapidly drain your vitality.
- Prioritize collecting fruit over defeating every enemy. You will lose more health standing still trying to land a difficult shot than if you simply jump over the enemy and grab the next piece of fruit.
