Released in 1993 by Sega Technical Institute for the Sega Genesis, Sonic Spinball takes the blue blur away from traditional platforming and throws him headfirst into a giant pinball machine. Instead of running through loops, you control Sonic as the ball inside Dr. Robotnik’s Veg-O-Fortress, ricocheting off bumpers to collect Chaos Emeralds and unlock boss battles. It blends the high-speed physics of a Sonic title with classic pinball mechanics, creating a unique spin-off in the 16-bit era.
How to Play
Your goal is to navigate through four massive pinball tables, collecting a required number of Chaos Emeralds to access the boss room at the top of each level. Use the D-pad (Arrow keys) to walk or nudge Sonic while he’s in the air, the A/B/C buttons (Z, X, C keys) to trigger the flippers, and Start (Enter) to pause. Losing Sonic down the bottom drain costs a life, so you’ll need quick reflexes to keep him in play.
Tips
- Steer in mid-air: Sonic isn’t completely at the mercy of gravity. Use the D-pad while he’s bouncing to adjust his trajectory toward specific targets or away from danger.
- Escape the slime: If you slip past the bottom flippers in the first level (Toxic Caves), you won’t die instantly. Quickly mash the jump button to leap out of the toxic sludge before you sink.
