Developed by Sega Technical Institute in 1993, Sonic Spinball takes the blue blur’s signature momentum-based gameplay and reimagines it as a sprawling Sega Genesis pinball platformer. Set within Dr. Robotnik’s mechanical Veg-O-Fortress, you control Sonic as he curls into his iconic spin attack, acting as the pinball across four massive, multi-tiered tables to collect Chaos Emeralds and defeat robotic enemies.
How to Play
The goal of each level is to collect a specific number of Chaos Emeralds to unlock the boss room, defeat the boss, and progress to the next table. You can control Sonic’s movement slightly while he is airborne, and you also trigger the flippers to send him flying back up the table.
- Movement: Arrow keys (controls Sonic’s momentum in the air)
- Left Flipper: Z
- Right Flipper: X
- Both Flippers: C
- Start / Pause: Enter
Tips
- You have limited mid-air control over Sonic after being hit by a flipper. Use the arrow keys to subtly steer him towards rings or pathways you might otherwise miss.
- If you drain down the middle or sides, you will lose a life. However, sometimes there are rescue platforms or extra flippers hidden in the drain lanes if you react quickly enough.
- Collecting enough rings will grant you an extra life, which is essential given the game’s steep difficulty curve.
