Sonic Spinball is an action-pinball game developed for the Sega Genesis in 1993. Dr. Robotnik has constructed the Veg-O-Fortress on Mt. Mobius, a deadly machine functioning as a giant pinball setup, and Sonic must infiltrate it by becoming the pinball himself. Combining classic Sonic the Hedgehog physics with traditional pinball mechanics, the game requires navigating multi-level tables, destroying badniks, and collecting Chaos Emeralds to progress. This specific version is an early beta build of the USA release.
How to Play
The objective is to collect all the Chaos Emeralds in each of the four tables to unlock the boss room. You use the D-pad (Arrow keys in the browser) to steer Sonic while he is bouncing through the air, allowing you to aim for specific ramps or save yourself from draining. Press the A, B, or C buttons (typically mapped to Z, X, and C) to operate the left and right flippers simultaneously.
Tips
- Control the descent: Don’t rely solely on the flippers. Pushing the D-pad left or right while Sonic is falling gives you substantial mid-air control to avoid hazards or land safely on a platform.
- Spin Dash on foot: When Sonic lands on flat surfaces, you can hold down and press an action button to perform a Spin Dash, which is crucial for climbing steep pipes or attacking enemies on the ground.
