NHL Hockey is a seminal 1991 sports game developed by Electronic Arts for the Sega Genesis. As the foundational entry in what would become a legendary franchise, it introduced the series’ signature vertical, top-down perspective that gave players a clearer view of the ice. While it featured the real NHL teams of the era, the player licensing was not yet secured, so athletes are represented by their jersey numbers rather than their names.
How to play
Players control skaters to outscore the opposition in fast-paced, arcade-style ice hockey. On offense, you can pass and shoot; on defense, you can check opponents to regain control of the puck.

Tips
- Body checking is fundamental to your defense. Time your checks carefully by anticipating the puck carrier’s path rather than just chasing them.
- Use the C button (mapped to Z) for a speed burst to close the gap when defending, but watch your player’s momentum to avoid overshooting your target.
