Mad City is an ambitious multi-genre action game developed by Konami and released for the Famicom (NES) in 1988. Best known in the West as The Adventures of Bayou Billy, the game stands out for blending three completely different styles of gameplay into a single adventure. Players take on the role of Billy West, fighting through the Louisiana swamps and city streets to rescue Annabelle from a crime boss, constantly shifting between side-scrolling beat-’em-up brawls, light-gun style shooting galleries, and fast-paced driving stages.
How to Play
Your objective is to survive all nine stages and defeat Gordon by mastering the mechanics of each gameplay style. The game uses standard NES controls, mapped in the browser to the arrow keys for movement, Z and X for the A and B buttons (used to jump, punch, shoot, or accelerate depending on the stage), and Enter/Shift for Start and Select. During the brawling stages, you can pick up weapons dropped by defeated enemies to increase your attack range and power.
Tips
- Grab enemy weapons: Whenever a defeated thug drops a stick, knife, or whip in the beat-’em-up stages, pick it up immediately. Weapons significantly improve your reach and damage.
- Manage your ammunition: In the shooting segments, your ammo is limited and carries over. Aim carefully and shoot the ammunition drops to keep your gun loaded.
- Abuse the jump kick: The jump kick is your safest and most reliable move during hand-to-hand combat, allowing you to hit enemies while staying out of their attack range.
