Ghosts ‘N Goblins is a 1985 NES platform action game by Capcom. You play as Arthur, a knight fighting through six stages of graveyards, ghost towns, and demon castles to rescue a kidnapped princess. The game is famous for its uncompromising difficulty — that reputation is fully earned.
How to Play
Move with the arrow keys. Press X to jump (NES A button) and Z to throw your weapon (NES B button). Enter starts the game.
Arthur can take two hits. The first knocks off his armour, leaving him in his underwear; the second kills him. Walking over a suit of armour on the ground re-equips him. You carry one weapon at a time — picking up a new one replaces the current one whether you want it to or not.
Tips
- You cannot steer mid-air once you have left the ground. Think through every jump before you take it — landing on an enemy while unarmoured is instant death.
- The Red Arremers (the red flying demons) react to your movement and will catch you in the air. Stand still to bait them close, then throw the moment they swoop in.
- Reaching the credits the first time is not the real ending. Completing the game sends Arthur back to replay from the beginning; finishing it a second time reveals the true conclusion.
