Terra Cresta is Nichibutsu’s 1985 vertical-scrolling shooter, first released in arcades and later brought to the NES. You pilot the WING SABRE across scrolling enemy territory, shooting down aircraft and ground installations wave after wave. It is a sequel to Moon Cresta (1980), and its defining idea is a modular wing system: collect parts as you fly and your ship’s firepower changes with each one you pick up.
How to play
Your ship starts with a single forward shot. Wing parts appear throughout each stage; collecting each one adds a new angle to your spread, broadening your coverage as you accumulate them. Collect all four and you can activate the Phoenix formation — your craft fuses into a flaming bird, invincible and lethal on contact, for a few seconds before burning out and returning you to the basic ship.
Use the arrow keys to move, X to fire, and Z for secondary fire. Enter starts the game; Shift is Select.
Tips
- Time the Phoenix. The formation is most valuable when enemies have boxed you in — using it then clears the screen and lets you reposition. Triggering it on an easy stretch wastes the window when it would really matter.
- Protect your wings. A death resets your wing configuration, leaving you with single-shot firepower in the middle of a packed stage. Once you have two or three parts stacked, play defensively — the spread is worth more than an aggressive push.
