Mad City (Japan) (Beta) is a 1988 action game developed by Konami for the NES. Known outside of Japan as The Adventures of Bayou Billy, this multi-genre experience combines side-scrolling beat-'em-up combat, high-speed driving stages, and rail-shooting segments. This specific beta build offers a fascinating look at the game before its final Japanese release, and features much more forgiving gameplay compared to the notoriously difficult Western version.
How to Play
Your goal is to guide Billy through various stages to rescue Annabelle from the crime boss Gordon. The gameplay style shifts depending on the stage. In beat-'em-up levels, you can punch, kick, and pick up weapons. During driving stages, navigate the road while dodging or shooting enemies. In the browser, the standard NES controls are mapped to your keyboard: use the Arrow Keys for movement and aiming, Z for the B button (attack/shoot), X for the A button (jump), plus Enter for Start and Shift for Select.
Gameplay Tips
During the side-scrolling combat stages, try to keep enemies on one side of you to avoid getting surrounded and overwhelmed. Weapons dropped by defeated foes, like sticks and guns, are incredibly powerful but have limited uses; save them for tougher sections or bosses rather than wasting them on weak grunts.
