Donkey Kong Jr. Math is a 1985 NES educational game developed and published by Nintendo. Released as an American launch title for the console, it turns arithmetic into a platform challenge: Donkey Kong Jr. climbs vines to grab numbered rings and math operators, building a calculation that equals the target number Donkey Kong holds up at the top of the screen.
How to play
There are two modes. In Exercise (one-player), you are given a target number and must grab the right digits and operators (+, −, ×, ÷) from the vines, in sequence, to reach it. In Calculate (two-player), both players race across shared vines to be first to match Donkey Kong’s target number. The higher levels in Exercise mode require multi-step calculations and careful planning before you start climbing.
Controls
Arrow keys move Donkey Kong Jr. and navigate menus. X is the A button, Z is B, Enter is Start, and Shift is Select.
Tips
- Study the target before you start climbing. Grabbing an operator without a usable number — or vice versa — can dead-end your equation with no way back.
- In Calculate mode, multiplication gets you to large targets far faster than repeated addition. If the target is in the double digits and a × ring is within reach, take it.
