Popeye is a single-screen action game developed and published by Nintendo. Three stages unfold across multi-tiered platforms where your job is to collect a set number of items thrown down by Olive Oyl — hearts in the first round, musical notes in the second, and baby birds in the third — while Bluto hunts you relentlessly. Clear your quota and the stages cycle again at higher speed.
How to Play
Move Popeye left and right with the arrow keys, and use the ladders to change levels. Your objective is to catch each falling item before it disappears off the bottom of the screen. Bluto patrols the platforms constantly and costs you a life on contact. When a spinach can appears, grab it fast — for a brief window Popeye can punch Bluto and send him flying. On later stages the Sea Hag also appears and hurls skulls to dodge.
Keyboard controls:
- Arrow keys — move / climb ladders
- Z — B button | X — A button (punch when spinach-powered)
- Enter — Start | Shift — Select
Tips
- Watch Olive Oyl’s position at the top and move into place before she releases the next item — chasing it across the screen often ends in a miss or a run-in with Bluto.
- Spinach appears on a regular cycle; rather than rushing for it immediately, wait until Bluto is between you and the can so you can grab it and punch in one motion.
- Bluto uses the ladders to follow you — take the ladder he is not heading for to buy breathing room.
