Shanghai II (Japan) (Proto) (Scorpion Layout) is a classic Mahjong solitaire puzzle game for the NES, dating back to 1990. In this unreleased prototype build, players are challenged to clear a tile arrangement shaped like a scorpion. As with traditional Mahjong solitaire, the objective is to find and match pairs of identical free tiles to remove them from the board, carefully planning moves to uncover the layers below without running out of available matches.
How to play
Clear the board by matching pairs of identical free tiles. A tile is considered “free” if it has no tiles covering it and can slide freely to either its left or right side. If no matches remain, the game ends.
- D-pad (Arrow keys): Move the cursor across the board
- A Button (Z key): Select a tile
- B Button (X key): Cancel selection
- Start (Enter key): Pause the game

- Focus on the peaks: Always prioritize matching tiles from the highest layers to reveal the hidden tiles underneath.
- Free up the long edges: Target tiles that block horizontal movement for adjacent tiles to open up more matching options.
