Game description:

Yume Koujou: Doki Doki Panic is a 1987 platformer developed by Nintendo for the Famicom Disk System. Originally created to promote Fuji Television’s “Yume Koujou” event, it stars the festival’s mascotsโ€”Imajin, Lina, Mama, and Papaโ€”on a quest to rescue two children from a storybook world. The game is famous for being reskinned and released internationally as Super Mario Bros. 2, introducing the unique mechanics of plucking vegetables from the ground and throwing enemies instead of stomping on them.

How to play

Choose one of the four characters, each with unique jump and speed stats, to navigate through the dream world’s levels. Since you cannot defeat enemies by jumping on them, you must pick up vegetables, blocks, or other enemies to use as projectiles.

  • Movement: Arrow Keys (D-pad)
  • Jump: Z (A button)
  • Pick Up / Throw / Run: X (B button)
  • Start / Select: Enter / Shift

Tips

  • Mama has the highest jumping ability, allowing her to reach hidden areas and shortcuts more easily.
  • Pull up grass quickly to uncover magic potions; throwing one creates a door to Subspace, where you can collect coins and health-increasing mushrooms.
  • You can safely ride on top of many enemiesโ€”this is useful for crossing large gaps or lining them up before picking one up to throw.
