Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic is a 1987 action-platformer Nintendo built for the Family Computer Disk System to tie in with Fuji TV’s Yume Kōjō ’87 summer event. It follows an Arabian family — Papa, Mama, their son Imajin, and his girlfriend Lina — as they chase the villain Mamu into a storybook world to rescue Imajin’s kidnapped twin siblings. The game is best known today as the direct basis for Super Mario Bros. 2 in the West: Nintendo kept the levels and mechanics intact and simply reskinned the cast as Mario, Luigi, Toad, and Peach.
How to Play
Pick one of the four family members and lead them through each stage to the door at the end. Enemies, jars, and grass tufts marked with a face can be pulled up and thrown to clear a path or defeat foes, and magic potions open a hidden door to Sub-Space, a mirror version of the level stocked with hearts and coins.
- Move / Duck: Arrow keys
- Jump: X (A button)
- Pick Up & Throw: Z (B button)
- Start / Select: Enter / Shift
Tips
- Pick the right character for the stage: Mama jumps highest of the four, and Lina can hover briefly to cross wide gaps — swap between them from the character-select screen before each level.
- Look before you touch: a face on an enemy, jar, or grass tuft means it can be pulled up with the B button rather than jumped over, and it doubles as a thrown weapon against nearby foes.
- Save a potion for when you’re stuck: using one opens a hidden Sub-Space door with extra hearts and coins.
