Williams Arcade Classics is a 1995 compilation developed by Digital Eclipse and published by Williams for the Sega Genesis. The collection faithfully ports five legendary arcade games from the early 1980s: Defender, Defender II (also known as Stargate), Joust, Robotron: 2084, and Sinistar. This release is well-regarded for accurately recreating the original arcade experience, bringing classic twitch-based gameplay and intense difficulty directly to the 16-bit console.
How to play
Because this collection features five distinct games, the objectives vary wildlyโfrom rescuing humanoids on a scrolling alien planet in Defender to jousting on flying ostriches or surviving endless robot hordes in Robotron: 2084.
- D-pad / Arrow Keys: Move your ship, knight, or character.
- A / S Key: Fire, flap (in Joust), or reverse direction (in Defender).
- B / X Key: Thrust (in Defender and Sinistar) or secondary fire.
- C / Z Key: Smart bomb or hyperspace, depending on the active game.
- Start / Enter: Start game / Pause.
Note: For dual-stick games like Robotron: 2084, the Genesis face buttons are mapped to shoot in different directions.
Tips
- Joust: Height is everything. You must be higher than the enemy knights when colliding to defeat them; otherwise, you will lose a life.
- Robotron: 2084: Prioritize saving the human family members for massive score multipliers, but never stop moving to avoid being swarmed by the Grunts.
- Sinistar: Mine crystals from the planetoids quickly to build Sinibombs, as they are the only weapon capable of destroying Sinistar once he is fully constructed.
