Originally developed by Discovery Software and brought to the Sega Genesis in 1990, Zoom! is a fast-paced action-puzzle game that challenges your reflexes and spatial awareness. You play as Smartboy, a creature tasked with capturing the Earth from invading Phantoms by sliding along the grid lines of various 3D-perspective boards. The game blends maze-chase mechanics with strategic territory capture, requiring you to outmaneuver erratic enemies while securing every tile on the stage.
How to Play
The objective is to trace the perimeter of every square on the grid. Once a square is completely outlined, it flashes to indicate it has been captured. You must capture all squares to complete the stage before the timer runs out, all while dodging enemies that roam the lines. Use the arrow keys (mapping to the Genesis D-pad) to move Smartboy along the grid. The Z, X, or C keys act as your Genesis A/B/C action buttons to use items you pick up along the way, and Enter functions as the Start button.
Tips
- Use the jump carefully: You can jump over enemies when you collect the spring item, but timing and positioning are crucial to avoid landing directly on another hazard.
- Trap the Phantoms: If you completely enclose an enemy inside a square at the exact moment you finish its perimeter, you eliminate them and score bonus points.
- Avoid backtracking: Plan your route to continuously cover new ground. Some stages feature power-ups like speed boosts or enemy-freezing hourglasses that are best utilized when moving forward efficiently.
