Williams Arcade Classics is a 1995 compilation developed by Digital Eclipse that brings several of the most iconic early 1980s coin-op hits to the SNES. Rather than rewriting the games from scratch, this collection runs the original arcade code, providing exceptionally accurate home versions of titles like Defender, Joust, Robotron: 2084, and Sinistar. It preserves the brutal difficulty and pure score-chasing focus that defined the golden age of arcades.
How to play
Each included game has its own rules, but all focus on surviving and racking up a high score before losing your lives. Joust requires you to flap to gain height and strike enemies from above, while Robotron: 2084 is a frantic twin-stick style shooter where you clear arenas of hostile machines.
- Directional keys: Move your ship, knight, or character
- Z / X / A / S: Action buttons (thrust, fire, flap, or attack depending on the game)
- Shift: Insert coin / Select
- Enter: Start
Tips
- In Joust, momentum is everything. Stay high above the center of the screen to quickly swoop down on spawning buzzards.
- For Robotron: 2084, keep moving constantly. Stop to shoot and you will quickly be overwhelmed by the crowd.
- In Defender, rely on your scanner at the top of the screen to track alien locations and protect the astronauts on the surface before they are abducted.
