Game description:

Wave Race 64 is a landmark jet ski racing game developed by Nintendo EAD and released for the Nintendo 64. Renowned for its groundbreaking water physics and dynamic wave simulation, the game challenges players to navigate aquatic courses across various conditions. You compete in championship circuits, time trials, and stunt modes, picking from a roster of four racers with distinct handling and acceleration profiles.

How to Play

The main objective is to finish each race in the top positions while navigating through a designated course of buoys. You must pass red buoys on the right side and yellow buoys on the left side. Successfully weaving past buoys increases your engine’s power meter, giving you a top-speed boost. Missing a buoy drops your power back to default, and missing five buoys in a single race results in immediate disqualification.

Controls: Use the Arrow Keys (mapping to the N64 analog stick) to steer your watercraft. Press X (A button) to accelerate, Z (B button) for sharp turns and braking, and Enter (Start) to pause the game. In stunt mode, you can combine steering with the action buttons to perform tricks.

Tips

  • Build your power meter: Focus on accurately passing buoys to reach maximum power. A fully charged meter provides a significant speed advantage over your opponents.
  • Adjust handling: Before starting a championship, you can tweak your chosen racer’s handling, engine, and grip. Lighter handling works better for courses with tight turns, while heavier grip is ideal for rougher waters.
  • Use the waves: The water dynamic changes lap by lap. Use large waves as ramps to jump over obstacles or cut corners, but be careful not to bounce too high and lose forward momentum.
