Wave Race 64 is Nintendo EAD’s jet ski racing game for the Nintendo 64, released in 1996. It was one of the console’s early showcase titles, built around a dynamic water physics engine that was genuinely novel at the time: waves form, peak, and break in real time, and they affect your ski’s handling, jump height, and stability throughout every race. The result is a game that still feels physical and reactive — rough water demands different lines than calm water, and those conditions change by course and difficulty.
How to play
Race through buoyed courses and pass each marker on the correct side — left-side buoys on your left, right-side buoys on your right. Thread five consecutive buoys cleanly and you receive a short speed boost; miss too many in a row and you are disqualified. Championship mode progresses through a series of tracks with increasingly heavy wave conditions. Stunt mode replaces racing with scored trick runs where you perform jumps and spins through a course.
Controls
- Steer left / right: Arrow keys ←→
- Accelerate: X (A button)
- Brake / reverse: Z (B button)
- Hop (stunt launch): S (R button)
- Start / pause: Enter
Tips
- Protect your buoy streak. Five in a row unlocks a boost that compounds over the lap — deliberately slowing to take a tight angle on a tricky gate is almost always faster than clipping it wrong and losing the chain.
- Ease off the throttle before a large crest, not after. Launching at full power sends you airborne and far off-course; a controlled jump off the wave’s shoulder keeps your nose down and lets you steer through the landing.
- On Expert difficulty, treat the swells like a rhythm section. Fighting every wave costs time; reading the pattern and steering with the water rather than against it is what separates clean laps from sloppy ones.
