Game description:

Super Hang-On is a 1987 arcade motorcycle racing game developed and published by Sega, the sequel to 1985’s Hang-On. Riding a full-throttle superbike, players race checkpoint to checkpoint against the clock across four continents, each course longer and tougher than the last. It became known for its raw sense of speed and the arcade cabinet’s motorcycle-replica controls, with riders leaning into every turn.

How to Play

Choose one of four courses — Africa, Asia, America, or Europe — each harder and longer than the one before it, with Europe stretching across eighteen stages. Your bike is always moving forward, so steer left and right with the arrow keys and shift gears with Up (high gear) and Down (low gear) to trade top speed for control through corners. Clear each checkpoint before the timer runs out to keep racing; hit the normal top speed of 280 km/h (174 mph) and a turbo kicks in, pushing you to 324 km/h (201 mph) for a short burst.

Tips

  • Downshift before sharp corners: High gear is fastest in a straight line but harder to control — drop to low gear heading into tight turns so you don’t run off the road and lose speed.
  • Chase the turbo: Reaching max speed briefly unlocks an even higher top speed, often the difference between clearing a checkpoint and running out of time.
  • Start with Africa: It’s the shortest, easiest course — a good way to learn the rhythm of the checkpoints before tackling Europe’s eighteen stages.
