Game description:

Developed by Westone Bit Entertainment in 1988, Wonder Boy III: Monster Lair is a Sega Genesis hybrid of an action-platformer and a shoot-’em-up. Departing from the exploration of the previous game, it offers a linear, arcade-style experience that automatically scrolls forward and supports two-player co-op. Each level is divided into two distinct halves: an on-foot section where you run and shoot enemies, followed by an aerial boss battle where your character rides a flying dragon.

How to play

Your vitality constantly depletes as the stage progresses, acting as a strict time limit. To survive, you must continuously collect fruit and other food items dropped by defeated enemies or found in the environment. Navigate using the arrow keys, and use S, X, and Z for jumping and attacking. Press Enter to start the game. During the flying sections, you have free movement in all directions to dodge incoming fire while shooting the boss.

Tips

  • Because your health constantly drains, prioritize grabbing fruit over defeating every enemy. Some enemies are better avoided entirely if pursuing them takes too much time.
  • Weapon power-ups are temporary and overwrite your current attack. Be careful not to pick up a situational weapon right before a boss fight if you already have a strong wide-shot or laser.
  • If you play in two-player co-op, coordinate who picks up the fruit; health is managed individually, and one player hoarding food will starve the other.
