Game description:

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (Nov 3, 1993 prototype) is a fascinating piece of gaming history, offering a playable glimpse into the development of Sega’s classic 1994 platformer. This pre-release build for the Sega Genesis features early level layouts, unfinished mechanics, and zones that were originally planned for Sonic 3 before being moved to Sonic & Knuckles, such as Flying Battery Zone. It provides a unique opportunity to experience the game as it existed before the famous split-cartridge decision was finalised.

How to Play

The objective is to speed through each zone, collect rings to protect yourself from damage, and defeat Dr. Robotnik’s badniks to reach the end of the act. By default, use the Arrow keys to move, crouch, or look up. Press Enter to Start, and use the Z, X, or C keys (acting as the Genesis A, B, and C buttons) to jump and perform spin attacks.

Tips

  • Because this is an unfinished prototype, some levels may have dead ends, buggy collisions, or incomplete boss fights. You can often use debug mode (if enabled in this build) or simply enjoy exploring the differences from the final game.
  • Keep an eye out for early versions of the elemental shields (Flame, Aqua, and Lightning), which offer double-jump abilities that work slightly differently in this early state.
