Developed by Sega in 1994, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is a fast-paced platformer for the Sega Genesis that expands on the series’ classic momentum-based gameplay. After crash-landing on Angel Island, Sonic and Tails must stop Doctor Robotnik from relaunching his Death Egg while facing off against Knuckles the Echidna, the island’s guardian who has been tricked into stealing their Chaos Emeralds.
The objective is to navigate sprawling, multi-tiered zones, collect rings to survive enemy hits, and defeat Robotnik’s boss machines at the end of each act. In the browser, the Sega Genesis controls map to your keyboard: use the arrow keys to move, Z, X, or C to jump and activate character abilities, and Enter for Start. Sonic can perform a brief invulnerable Insta-Shield by pressing jump again in mid-air, while Tails can fly by rapidly tapping jump.
When playing as Sonic, take advantage of the new elemental shields. The Flame Shield grants a horizontal fireball dash and immunity to fire, the Water Shield allows you to bounce and breathe underwater, and the Lightning Shield provides a double jump while magnetically attracting rings. To find the giant rings that lead to the ‘Blue Spheres’ special stages, keep an eye out for hollow-sounding walls or alternative paths, as they are often tucked away in hidden alcoves.
