Rainbow Islands is Taito’s platform game originally released in arcades in 1987 and available here in its Sega Genesis version â and the direct sequel to Bubble Bobble. You play as Bub, now armed with magical rainbow arcs instead of bubbles, climbing through seven monster-filled islands while floodwaters rise relentlessly from below.
How to Play
Shoot rainbow arcs upward and diagonally to strike enemies, or fire them over gaps to create short-lived platforms you can stand and jump on â they vanish after a few seconds, so use them decisively. Each island consists of four stages; clearing the top of all four advances you to the next island. Hidden across each island are seven coloured gems, one per stage in the seven colours of the rainbow. Collect all seven gems in an island to work toward the game’s true ending.

Tips
- The floodwaters rise without pause â always bias upward. Lingering on a lower platform to collect extra items costs lives.
- Rainbows serve two purposes: shoot one into a cluster of enemies to clear them, or fire one over a gap and step onto it as a bridge before it disappears.
- Each island’s seven coloured gems must all be collected within that island; a missed colour cannot be recovered in a later stage.
