Game description:

Released in 1987 by Tecmo, Solomon’s Key is a challenging action-puzzle game for the NES that casts you as the wizard Dana. Your objective is to navigate through 50 complex labyrinthine rooms by strategically creating and destroying blocks to avoid enemies and retrieve the magical title artifact.

How to Play

Each room requires you to find a key that opens the exit door before the timer runs out. Your primary ability is casting and breaking blocks with your wand, which you can use to build paths, trap monsters, or shield yourself. Use the Arrow Keys to move, Z and X to cast blocks and jump (NES A/B buttons), and Enter/Shift for Start and Select.

Tips

  • Always observe enemy movement patterns before you start building; monsters like the gargoyles and ghosts follow strict, predictable routines.
  • You can break a block from directly below by jumping into it, which is essential for quickly dropping enemies or escaping tight spots.
  • Grab the fireball power-ups when available. They allow you to shoot projectiles to permanently eliminate certain enemies, clearing the way for safer puzzle-solving.
