Developed by Rare and released in 1987, Wizards & Warriors is an action-platformer for the NES. You play as the knight Kuros, exploring the Kingdom of Elrond to defeat the evil wizard Malkil. It stands out from typical platformers of the era with its heavy focus on exploration, requiring you to find keys and treasure rather than just moving left to right, and a combat system where Kuros automatically strikes with his sword while airborne.
How to play
Your goal is to navigate interconnected areas, find keys to open chests, collect enough gems to bribe the knights guarding the exits, and defeat the boss at the end of each stage. For controls in the browser, use the arrow keys to move, Z to jump (NES A button), X to use magic or items (NES B button), and Enter to pause (Start).
Tips
- Kuros’s primary attack is tied to his jump. Bouncing off enemies while airborne is often safer and more effective than standing and swinging on the ground.
- The Potion of Levitation allows you to float by holding the jump button, which is essential for reaching higher platforms and avoiding hazards.
- Don’t worry too much about dying; the game offers unlimited continues and you respawn exactly where you died, though your score will reset.
