Section Z is a multi-directional scrolling shooter released by Capcom for the arcade in 1985. You play as an astronaut equipped with a jetpack and a laser rifle, deployed into a massive enemy space station to stop the forces of the Balangool empire. The game is distinct from typical side-scrollers of the era because it allows you to move freely around the screen and change the direction you are facing, adding a strategic layer to the fast-paced combat.
How to Play
Your objective is to fight your way through the alphabetical sectors of the space station and destroy the core located at Section Z.
- Movement: Use the arrow keys (or arcade joystick) to fly in eight directions.
- Fire: Press Z (Button 1) to shoot your laser and simultaneously drop bombs toward the ground.
- Turn: Press X (Button 2) to flip your astronaut to face left or right.
Tips
- Master the Turn: Enemies constantly swarm from both sides of the screen. Get comfortable alternating your facing direction while flying away from danger.
- Bomb Ground Targets: Since your primary fire also drops bombs, position yourself above turrets and ground-based enemies to take them out before they can shoot.
- Watch Your Spacing: While the screen scrolls automatically, staying near the center gives you the most time to react to hazards appearing from either edge.
