Paddle Mania is a fast-paced, chaotic sports title released by SNK for the arcade in 1988. While it looks like a traditional tennis match at first glance, it plays much more like competitive air hockey. Across nine themed courts, you must defend your goal while trying to angle shots past an increasingly bizarre cast of opponents. Instead of standard athletes, your challengers include volleyball teams, synchronized swimmers, surfers, and even a sumo wrestler, each bringing unique gimmicks and multi-ball barrages to the court.
How to Play
The objective is to protect your goal zone at the bottom of the screen while hitting the ball past your opponent’s defenses. Use the Arrow Keys to move your character laterally and position yourself for a return, and press Z, X, or Space to swing your paddle. Timing and positioning are critical to angle the ball effectively and bypass moving barriers or obstructed goals on later stages. Insert coins with Shift and start with Enter.
Tips
- Watch for angles: The mechanics heavily rely on deflecting the ball at sharp angles. Try to catch the ball on the edge of your paddle to send it flying in unexpected directions.
- Prioritize defense: When facing opponents who use multiple characters or multi-ball attacks, focus on guarding your zone and let their mistakes create openings for you.
