Developed by David Crane and released by Activision in 1984, Ghostbusters on the Atari 2600 is an ambitious mix of resource management and action. You start with a business loan to purchase your vehicle and ghost-catching equipment, then hit the city map to respond to calls. The goal is to run a profitable franchise by capturing ghosts and preventing roamers from reaching the Zuul building before the city’s psychokinetic (PK) energy level hits 9999.
How to play
Navigate the city map to reach flashing red buildings. During the driving sequence, use your joystick to steer the Ecto-1 and vacuum up roamers. When you arrive at a haunted building, drop the trap, position your two Ghostbusters, and activate their proton streams to corral the ghost over the trap before springing it.

Tips
- Buy the Ghost Vacuum: This is an essential upgrade. Vacuuming roamers while driving keeps the city’s PK energy from rising too quickly.
- Don’t cross the streams: If you move your two Ghostbusters too close together, their proton streams will short out and end the capture attempt.
- Use Ghost Bait: If you have the Ghost Bait equipped, use it when the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man forms to prevent him from destroying a city block and costing you $10,000.
