Dig Dug is Namco’s 1982 underground action game, ported to the Atari 2600 from its popular arcade original. You play a helmeted digger who carves tunnels through layers of earth, hunting two enemy types: Pookas â the round, red rolling creatures â and Fygars, the green dragons that breathe fire. Every stage ends when all enemies are eliminated.
How to play
Arrow keys move your digger and cut new tunnels in whichever direction you push. Press Spacebar to use your pump and inflate an enemy; tap repeatedly to pump faster. A fully inflated enemy bursts â release too soon and they deflate and escape, so finish what you start. The second way to kill is environmental: dig the dirt out from beneath a large rock and it falls on any enemy standing below. A boulder that catches two or three enemies at once scores a multiplied bonus.
Fygars breathe fire in a straight horizontal line, so approach them from above or below to stay safe. Enemies left idle for too long turn ghostly and can drift through solid earth straight toward you, so clear the board steadily rather than chasing one enemy around while others wander.
Tips
- Plan your tunnels around the rock positions from the start â a boulder that drops on a cluster of enemies is worth far more than pumping them one by one.
- The last surviving enemy on a stage speeds up noticeably; try to avoid leaving it until everything else is gone.
- Dig a web of paths through the middle layers early so you have room to maneuver when multiple enemies converge.
Player 2 uses TGFH to move and A to pump. F11 selects a game variant; F12 resets the stage.
