Designed by John Dunn and released by Atari, Inc. in 1978, Superman for the Atari 2600 is one of the earliest action-adventure console games and the first superhero title in gaming history. Players guide the Man of Steel across multi-screen Metropolis to rebuild a destroyed bridge, capture Lex Luthor and his syndicate, and return safely to the Daily Planet phone booth.
How to Play
Your objective is to locate the three missing pieces of the Waterfront Bridge and fit them together, capture Lex Luthor and his four henchmen to deliver them to the Metropolis jail, and finally enter the phone booth to change back into Clark Kent. Superman flies in eight directions and carries items or captured villains one at a time upon contact.
Use the arrow keys to fly or walk in eight directions. Press Spacebar to use your action trigger and activate X-ray vision, which reveals adjacent screen contents. Press F11 to select options or F12 to reset the game.
Tips
Restore flight with Lois Lane: Touching Kryptonite thrown by Lex Luthor strips away your ability to fly. Find and touch Lois Lane to immediately regain full powers.
Scout ahead with X-ray vision: Press the action trigger while holding a direction to peer into adjoining screens, helping you locate roaming criminals and bridge pieces faster.
Clear the city systematically: Haul captured gang members directly to the jail screen first so they no longer harass you while you gather and assemble the three bridge parts.
