Game description:

Night Driver is a pioneering first-person racing game developed by Atari, Inc. and released for the Atari 2600 in 1976. As one of the earliest examples of a driving simulator, it tasks players with navigating a winding, pitch-black road illuminated only by reflective posts along the shoulders. The illusion of forward momentum and 3D depth, achieved on extremely limited hardware, makes it a fascinating piece of early arcade and console history.

How to Play

The objective is to score as many points as possible within the time limit by keeping the car on the road and avoiding crashes. Hitting the shoulder posts will bring your car to a complete stop, costing valuable time. You can steer the vehicle using the Arrow keys (↑↓←→) and accelerate by pressing the Spacebar. If you want to simulate the original paddle controller experience, press Alt+L to toggle paddle/joystick mode.

Tips

  • Anticipate the curves: The reflective posts will shift smoothly when the road goes straight, but they will sharply snap to the sides when a tight turn approaches. Learn to read these sudden shifts to begin steering early.
  • Manage your speed: You don’t have to keep the accelerator held down constantly. Releasing the Spacebar to coast through sharp corners is often much safer and faster than crashing and having to accelerate from a dead stop.
