Originally a hit in the arcades, Dig Dug is a classic action maze game released for the NES by Namco in 1985. You play as Taizo Hori, tunneling through the earth to eliminate underground monsters. You can defeat the goggle-wearing Pookas and fire-breathing Fygars either by inflating them with your air pump until they pop, or by strategically dropping rocks on them. The game challenges you to balance fast digging with careful positioning as the enemies speed up and the levels get deeper.
How to Play
Your goal is to clear each stage of all monsters. You can dig in four directions, creating your own maze. Use the Arrow Keys to move and dig. Press Z or X to use your air pump to stun and inflate enemies. Use Enter for Start and Shift for Select. Points are awarded for popping enemies, but dropping rocks on multiple enemies at once yields higher scores.
Tips
- Lure and crush: Tunnel under a rock and wait for enemies to follow you down the vertical shaft. Step out of the way just as the rock falls to crush them for bonus points.
- Stun for safety: You don’t have to pop an enemy immediately. You can pump them once or twice to stun them, allowing you to run past safely or set up a rock drop.
- Watch for fire: Fygars can breathe fire horizontally. Approach them from above or below, or stay out of their direct line of sight when moving side-to-side.
