Crypts of Chaos is an ambitious 1982 first-person dungeon crawler for the Atari 2600, published by Fox Video Games. You navigate through maze-like crypts from a first-person perspective, fighting scaling monsters and managing a limited inventory of weapons and magic to survive and escape.
How to play
The objective is to explore the maze, defeat monsters, collect treasure, and eventually escape. Use the arrow keys to navigate the hallways. When a monster approaches, press the Down arrow to switch to your inventory at the bottom of the screen, select a weapon, and press the Spacebar to attack.
Tips
- Because the mazes are large and lack an in-game map, grab some graph paper to draw your own map as you explore.
- Keep a mental count of your magic wand and ring charges, as the game does not display a counter on-screen. Some charges will be restored when you reach a new floor.
- Your sword has unlimited uses but is entirely ineffective against wizards, so save your magical items for those encounters.
