Game description:

Released in 1980 by Activision, Checkers brings the traditional board game to the Atari 2600. It faithfully adapts the familiar rules of moving diagonally, capturing opponent pieces, and crowning kings. Whether testing your strategy against the computer or challenging a friend in the local two-player mode, it remains a straightforward and accessible digital recreation.

How to Play

The objective is to capture all of your opponent’s pieces or block them so they cannot make a valid move. Pieces move diagonally forward one square at a time, or can jump over an adjacent opponent piece to capture it. When a piece reaches the opposite end of the board, it is crowned a king and gains the ability to move and jump diagonally backward as well.

Tips

  • Control the center of the board to give your pieces more mobility and options. Pieces on the edges have restricted movement and cannot attack.
  • Keep your back row of pieces intact for as long as possible. This creates a solid defensive line that prevents your opponent from crowning their pieces into kings.
  • Look for opportunities to force your opponent into unfavorable trades. You can intentionally sacrifice a piece to set up a double or triple jump on your next turn.
