Game description:

Phoenix is a fixed shooter by Amstar Electronics, released to arcades in 1980 and ported to the Atari 2600 by Atari. You command a lone spacecraft against five escalating waves of alien birds that dive, bomb, and eventually mass behind a massive armoured mother-ship — all for a high score that resets with every run.

How to play

Your ship slides left and right along the bottom of the screen. Waves one through four send formations of bird-like aliens sweeping across the top, peeling off into diving runs and dropping bombs as they descend. Clear the formation to advance. The fifth wave is the mother-ship: a large craft protected by two rotating shield layers. Shoot through the gaps in the shields to reach the alien pilot inside; destroy the pilot and the full cycle restarts at higher speed.

Browser controls (Player 1): arrow keys to move, Spacebar to fire. F12 resets the game; F11 cycles the game-select option.

Tips

  • Clear the outer columns of each wave’s formation first — fewer enemies means fewer simultaneous diving runs and more room to dodge.
  • On the mother-ship wave, time your shots to pass through the shield gaps rather than firing into solid segments.
  • Enemy bombs fall from the alien’s position when it fires. Keep moving so you are never directly below a diving bird.
