Football is an American football game released by Atari, Inc. for the Atari 2600 in 1978. The action plays out on a top-down overhead field: before each snap, both the offence and the defence choose their formation using the joystick, then the ball is live and the real-time struggle begins. It was among the earliest home-console takes on the sport, and the two-player head-to-head mode — where reading your opponent’s play call matters as much as hand-eye coordination — is still the reason to come back to it.
How to play
Steer your player with the joystick and use the trigger to snap the ball, hand off, or make a tackle. Before each play both sides tilt the joystick to select their offensive play or defensive alignment — that pre-snap decision is where the game’s strategy lives. Use SELECT (F11) to set game options such as the number of players and difficulty; RESET (F12) starts a new match.
