Phoenix Taito is a classic 1980 arcade fixed shooter that stands out as one of the earliest games to feature a distinct boss battle. Developed by Amstar Electronics, players control a lone spaceship defending against waves of diving, bird-like aliens across five unique stages. You will battle smaller swooping birds, larger aliens that hatch from eggs, and finally face off against a massive mothership, where you must chip away at its hull to defeat the alien commander inside.
How to Play
Your objective is to survive all five stages and destroy the alien mothership to loop the game. You can move your ship left and right, fire your weapon, and deploy a temporary force field that makes you invincible but unable to move. Use the Arrow keys to move, Z to shoot, and X to activate your shield. Press Shift to insert a coin and Enter to start the game.
Tips
- Your shield lasts for a few seconds but takes time to recharge. Only use it when you are trapped by enemy fire or diving birds.
- During the mothership battle, focus on shooting a direct vertical path through its hull and rotating shield to hit the alien commander, rather than clearing the entire structure.
- The larger birds in stages three and four take multiple hits unless you strike them perfectly in the center.
