Game description:

Phoenix is a classic 1980 arcade fixed shooter by Amstar, released under license by Centuri. As one of the earliest games to feature distinct levels and a dedicated boss fight, it stands as a significant title in arcade history. Players control a spaceship defending against waves of alien birds, culminating in a battle against an alien mothership.

How to play

Your objective is to survive five distinct waves of enemies, ending with the mothership boss. Your spaceship can move left and right and fire upwards. You also have a temporary shield that grants invulnerability, but using it immobilizes your ship for its duration, and you must wait for a brief cooldown before activating it again. Arcade controls are typically mapped to your keyboard’s arrow keys for movement, and Z, X, or Space for shooting and shielding.

Tips

  • Use your shield defensively when overwhelmed by diving enemies or when dodging the mothership’s central laser. Remember that you cannot move while shielded.
  • In the early waves, take out the birds while they are still in formation before they begin their erratic diving patterns.
  • To defeat the mothership, shoot a path through the outer hull and inner rotating shield to hit the alien pilot directly.
