Released by Konami in 1992, Axelay is a defining shoot ’em up for the SNES. Known for its incredible technical showcase, the game alternates between side-scrolling stages and spectacular vertical levels that use the console’s Mode 7 capabilities to create a unique rolling 3D horizon. You pilot the D117B fighter to save the Illis solar system from an alien armada.
How to play
Instead of relying on traditional power-ups, you choose three distinct weapons before each stageโa standard shot, a special weapon, and a heavy attack. You can cycle through them on the fly. Rather than dying instantly from a single enemy shot, taking damage disables your currently equipped weapon, forcing you to rely on the others until you lose your last one or crash into the terrain.

Tips
Use your weapon cycle defensively; if you are about to take an unavoidable hit, switch to your least useful weapon so you do not lose your primary offense. During the Mode 7 vertical stages, remember that enemies appearing on the horizon are further away and cannot hurt you until they crest the curve and enter the main playing field.
