Axelay is a renowned 1992 scrolling shooter developed by Konami for the Super Nintendo (SNES). It is famous for seamlessly alternating between traditional horizontal side-scrolling stages and unique vertical stages that utilize the console’s Mode 7 capabilities to create a simulated 3D rolling effect.
How to Play
Your objective is to pilot the D117B fighter through six stages of an alien armada. Before each level, you select three distinct weapon types (standard, special, and sub). In the browser, the standard SNES controls map to the arrow keys for movement, Z/X/A/S for the face buttons to fire and cycle your weapons, Q/W for the shoulder buttons, and Enter/Shift for Start and Select.
Tips
- Instead of a standard health bar or one-hit deaths, taking damage destroys your currently equipped weapon pod. You only explode if you take a hit while no weapons are left.
- In the vertical Mode 7 stages, enemies slowly scroll into view from beyond the horizon. Use this extra visibility to preemptively align your ship before they enter firing range.
