Game description:

Universal Soldier is an unreleased run-and-gun prototype for the Super Nintendo (SNES). Originally intended as a movie tie-in by Accolade, the game is actually a rebranded adaptation of the classic Turrican II, with the main character sprites swapped out to match the film. Although the SNES version was officially canceled before its release, the completed ROM eventually leaked online, allowing fans to play this unusual piece of gaming history.

How to Play

As a reskinned Turrican II, the gameplay focuses on exploring large, multi-directional levels while blasting through waves of enemies. Use the D-pad to move, aim, and crouch. Press the jump button (Z) and shoot (X). You can also hold the shoot button to activate a directional laser whip, or press the special attack button to clear the screen of enemies. Be mindful of your surroundings, as the sprawling levels hide numerous power-ups and secrets.

Tips

  • Master the laser whip: Hold down the fire button to project a continuous laser that you can rotate to hit enemies above or below you, which is essential for surviving crowded areas.
  • Explore thoroughly: Unlike linear platformers, these levels are huge and maze-like. Check every corner for weapon upgrades and extra lives hidden in the expansive environments.
