Game description:

Wayne Gretzky’s 3D Hockey brings fast-paced, over-the-top arcade sports action to the Nintendo 64. Originally developed for arcades by Atari Games and brought to the N64 in 1997, this title trades realistic simulation for pure fun. Expect exaggerated checks that send opponents over the boards, blazing slapshots that can literally set the net on fire, and the ability to turn goalies into literal brick walls. As the first four-player game released for the system, it remains a classic multiplayer experience.

How to Play

In standard arcade mode, teams play 3-on-3 hockey with almost no rules or penalties. Your objective is to outscore the opposing team using exaggerated moves and power-ups. The basic controls for the Nintendo 64 map to your keyboard: use the arrow keys to skate, Z to pass or switch players, and X to shoot or body check. The Enter key acts as Start to pause the game.

Tips

  • Power Shots: String together multiple successful passes without turning the puck over to charge up a power shot. When the puck glows, fire it for a high-speed slapshot that is incredibly difficult to save.
  • Aggressive Defense: There are no penalties in arcade mode, so check aggressively. Hitting an opponent hard enough can occasionally send an ambulance driving across the screen or cause them to wobble like a fighting game character.
  • Goaltender Controls: Let the AI handle routine saves, but be ready to manually clear the puck once the goalie catches it to prevent the opposing team from setting up a quick rebound shot.
