Released by LucasArts and Sculptured Software in 1993, Super Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back is a notoriously challenging action platformer for the SNES. Following the events of the classic film, players battle through the icy wastes of Hoth, the swamps of Dagobah, and the floating halls of Cloud City. The game mixes frantic run-and-gun shooting with vehicular combat, letting you pilot Snowspeeders to take down AT-ATs and switch between Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Chewbacca.
How to Play
Your goal is to survive the relentless enemy waves and platforming hazards across each movie-inspired stage. You can switch between characters when the story allows, each bringing different weapons and abilitiesโlike Luke’s lightsaber and Force powers. Use the arrow keys to move, duck, and aim your weapon. Press Z and X for primary actions like jumping and shooting, while A and S handle secondary actions. The Q and E keys trigger the shoulder buttons, which are crucial for blocking or performing combat rolls, and Enter pauses the game.
Tips
- Master the dodge roll: The combat roll makes you temporarily invincible, which is essential for dodging heavy blaster fire and getting out of corners.
- Farm health drops: Enemies respawn infinitely in many areas. If you are low on health, find a safe spot to pick off weaker enemies until they drop hearts.
- Protect your blaster upgrades: Collecting blaster power-ups increases your firepower, but taking damage will downgrade your weapon level. Play defensively when fully upgraded.
